If you haven’t been hiding under a rock for the past few months, you’ll know Senator Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign has been striving to connect with young voters through popular music. As if that wasn’t enough already, supporters of the candidate are hosting their very own Berniechella, a free block party in none other than Old Town Coachella! What’s even crazier is that Berniechella is sandwiched between actual Coachella’s weekend one and two! The event is scheduled for Thursday, April 21st from 5PM to midnight and Friday, April 22nd from 9AM to 2PM.
This free block party will feature DJs such as Sheppard Fairey and Zoe Kravitiz and aritists such as Ozomatli, Venice & the Moon, and Moses Summey. Berniechella is not only bringing amazing musical performances, but also live art and interactive installations and promises of a beer garden and food vendors. Although the event organizers have been in contact with Sanders’ campaign, they are still unsure of Senator Sanders’ attendance. The event is expected to draw about 1,500 to 3,000 attendees though that number could increase.
Not only is this event free for attendees, but also free for the city! The city itself won’t be spending anything on Berniechella; the organizers will be completely handling the bill. Mayor Steven Hernandez noted in a statement that such an event was held around Coachella. “I think it’s good for us. It’s good for democracy and it’s good for the city,” he added.
What better way to head into Coachella than stopping by Berniechella, located along Grapefruit Boulevard and Vine Street in Old Town Coachella, and “feel the bern!”
